VW Westfalia SO23 - 1960

Overview

We bouth this bus in 2007 from a VW Westfalia enthusiast in the UK
The bus was originally bought by Elva and Wilma Ditman from Long Beach California.
The Ditman sisters were in their ’50s, unmarried and bought this bus for their retirement.
They toured Europe via the VW Tourist Delivery program in 1960 en did antoher Eruope trip in 1962.
This camper was used primarily for local trips once the Ditman sisters completed their european tours in the mid 60’s. Iit was last registered in ’78, the same year Elva passed away. Wilma stopped driving at that same time as she developed dimensia. in ’95 their nephew James came from Michigan to take care of Wilma in her vintage craftsman style home, which was stuffed with treasures, and restored the house.
One day he decided to check out the little 1-car garage in the backyard, which had a caved-in roof and was overgrown with bushes. He didn’t know anything about vintage vw’s, but he knew there was something special in that garage. James thought for sure that rodents would have eaten the interior, but he opened the doors to reveal that it was completely intact. (the sisters installed heavy upholstery over the orig plaid very early on, so after removing 10-billion little staples, the o.g. material was still very good.) He hired a demo crew to dismantle the garage *around* the bus and towed it to Circle Motors for new brakes and motor work. The mechanic remembered the Ditman sisters from the early sixties.
